Region

Monki’s neighbourhood is only natural that this colourful green and lands proves very attractive to people who want to relax amidst fresh, rich natural beauty in peace and quiet. There is Biebrza National Park, Knyszyn Landscape Park and Narew National Park. The special tourist attraction is Osowiec- an old fortress.

  • Biebrza National Park

The Biebrza Marshes in the Biebrza Basin are the best- preserved area of marshes and swamps in Central Europe. In the valley of The Biebrza River, flooded heavily every spring, natural plant communities grow in several zones. Rushes grow on the banks of the river and ox- bow lakes; further is the zone of sedges; and still further the river valley is covered by vast swamps with sedgy meadows, willow shrubs and wet alder and birch forests. The Biebrza Basin has sparse population. Human settlements are scattered 10 or 15 kilometres apart. Instead, the area is rich in wildlife. A vast number of European waterfowl and birds of prey live and nest here. To admire nature in the Biebrza valley it is best to walk along dams and roads across the marshes. There are not many villages and towns in the area. In Osowiec- the headquarters of Biebrza National Park there are many guides.

  • Knyszyn Landscape Park

This Park was created in 1988. It is one of the very last spots in Europe where the landscape is still unspoiled by industrialisation and where endangered rare species can still be observed in their natural environment. There are for example elks, deers, boars, even bisons from Białowieża.

  • Narew National Park

This Park is one of the youngest parks in Poland. It was created in 1996. The abundance of species inhabiting the banks of Narew is very strongly connected with the general tendency of such regions to provide excellent conditions for the support of vast numbers of animals.

  • Osowiec Fortress

Osowiec Fortress was built in 1892. It is a site of an old fortress. The moats that surround it and the nearby reserve in an old river- bed of Biebrza are habitats of beavers. There are some old bunkers, torn bunkers and other remains of the Second World War front. From three years there is also a museum and painting workshops but the most famous is probably the ‘death tunnel’ where some ghosts and other apparitions can be found.

  • Tykocin

It is an old, lovely town about 12 km from Mońki. The most known structure is the old synagogue dating from 1642 where is a museum now. Interesting also would be an excursion to the late- baroque church and monument of Stefan Czarniecki.
